What is it?
You might hear this called vestibular disorders, or balance disorders. It happens when something affects the vestibular system – the connection between the inner ear, brain and sensory receptors of the feet.
One type of common problem is when the crystals come loose in the innermost part of the ear. That’s the part of the ear with fluid in it that keeps us balanced and gives us a sense of where we are. When the crystals slough off, your brain and your eyes tell you two different things —and that’s not how the body is meant to function.
The Epley maneuver will correct the displacement of the crystals.
What should you expect from Springer PT?
We do a thorough assessment of balance, asking you to do that with your eyes closed and then with your eyes open. Using that data, along with what we learn from our conversation with you, we’ll create a customized program. We’ll help you strengthen the system so that the brain, eyes, and sensory information all work together in a pattern using adaptation and habituation exercises for weakness of the vestibular system.
Does this sound like you?
This could be you if you experience vertigo or dizziness, or have trouble balancing (perhaps leading to falls). Vestibular conditions can also be the reason you struggle to keep your eyes fixed on something (called gaze instability). Vestibular conditions can also be related to migraines, Meniere’s disease, labyrinthitis, or any kind of infection of the vestibular nerve.
